SURVIVE TO LIVE

Clàudia Espin

Close your eyes, imagine for a moment you are a child again, but with the difference that now you have to survive to live. Without a decent shelter, without drinking water or running water and without having food to eat. It is obvious that living such a miserable life must be very hard. All the people who are poor they live with hope, they feel hope for his life, they feel that it can change for a good. Poverty is a social problem and people must to prevent it from going further.

This photo was taken by Andy Golsten in 2006.  In the background of the picture we can see mountains and mountains of garbage; surely it is an accumulation of plastic bags and the remains of little food. Are those the same plastics that they use later to make their own houses. In the middle of the photo stand out the silhouette of a little boy of brown skin, he must be around 9 years old. He wears dirty and worn clothes, a huge jacket with a belt, surely it must be one of the only clothes he has. He wears mountain shoes, but as we can see they are not their size. The grace of this photo is that in his right hand he is holding a hamburger, with the intention of eating it since his mouth is open.

Surely it is the only thing that he has

found of food in all that pile of rubbish. His face seems happy at that moment. Near he, a few meters away there are a dog. Although it is white their legs are browns, because of the dirt of the ground. This symbolizes that it is a stray dog. He is sniffing the ground to look for food, it seems worried and starving, although it isn't really thin. as we can see the ground is full and full of plastic and heaps of dirt. Even behind the child we can see sacks, many sacks. In the sky we can see two black birds, and it seems that they are flying in a circle, near where the child is. Surely they go in search of garbage. it is an image with a lot of quality.

It is very unfair that many people have to live this type of live. The profound injustice evidenced by the images denigrates the societies that make it possible. Poverty can be analysed from various perspectives: economic, sociological, political moral, etc. but they all have something in common, the lack. The lack of money, the lack of resources, the lack of food and the absence of purchasing power. This have to change, each one has to contribute their grain of sand. Put yourself in their shoes, how would you feel? These extremes of poverty it should not exist. All these children, adults, who live those circumstances are true superheroes, and it's in our hands the possible of reach more in their lives, they deserve it.
